The Mitsubishi 9850 HB is one of those quietly enduring graphite pencils that has remained in continuous production not because of nostalgia, but because it simply does its job exceptionally well. Its finish is understated: a deep burgundy lacquer with crisp silver stamping, cleanly applied and durable enough to withstand daily handling without quickly wearing away. Its semi-hexagonal rounded cedar barrel is precisely milled, offering a comfortable grip that resists rolling while sharpening cleanly to a long, fine point, capped by a non-smudging white eraser. What distinguishes the Mitsubishi 9850 is its graphite. The HB lead is smooth without being soft, firm without feeling scratchy — a carefully tuned formulation that produces a consistent, medium-dark line with light pressure. It’s well suited to extended writing sessions, where fatigue can make overly hard or waxy leads tiring to use.
